In recent years, the world has been striving to cope with energy shortages and global climatic changes have been growing worse. These are the very most important problems to solve for the human race to continue its development.
The ultimate solution for overcoming the ever-worsening global energy crisis is to secure safe, environment-friendly and abundant energy sources by developing new future energy technologies. Korea has a precarious economic structure depending heavily on imported energy and because of heavy usage from its current generation. Therefore, a sacred responsibility and duty to develop technologies essential for clean and reliable future energy sources for the next generation to inherit is a must.
NFRI is a unique national Institute dedicated to conducting research and development of fusion energy, which has been attracting worldwide attention as an inexhaustible source of future energy. Employing our domestic technologies, NFRI has constructed the world's highest-ranking fusion research device named KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research). We established an initial performance milestone by successfully generating the first plasma thereby bringing the dream of fusion energy commercialization one step closer to reality.
NFRI has been actively involved in the world's largest joint fusion project - International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), in which seven countries are participating to investigate engineering feasibility of fusion power commercialization. We are inside of the worlds' effort to start a new fusion energy generation by the middle of the 21st century.
Moreover, through the commercialization of technology coming from the research of plasma and fusion energy, we make efforts to distribute and utilize in various industrial fields and to create new and high-valued fields for our nation and the world.
NFRI is deeply committed to doing our best to become a "World Leading Institute" capable of leading global development of fusion technologies, in addition to serving as the national fusion R&D center and transforming Korea into an energy-independent and energy-exporting country.
Thank you again for visiting the NFRI website.
